[Age] Sixteen.
[Canon] Brave.
[Point in time taken from canon] Moments before Merida gives her mother the 'special cake' to change her.
[Background]
Wiki page and TVtropes, if that helps.
[Personality]
Merida is as wild as her hair, refusing to be still or fit to any standards she doesn't agree with. At the point I've taken her from, she cares more about herself and her future than that of the kingdom and her family. She isn't mean or selfish, she just can't see eye to eye with her mother and therefore can't understand what the 'big deal' is about being a lady. In fact, Merida often goes out of her way to defy her mother, refusing to listen to her and defiant that she's right all the time. One could say that makes her the typical teenager, but she does love her mother, father, and three brothers very deeply. Often, however, her pride comes before her love.
Just what she wants to do with her life, she isn't sure, but she does know she wants it to be her choice. She loves to prove how great she is to those around her - upon hearing from her father about a great cliff only warriors could get to the top of, she went about and climbed it, bragging about it later. She can also easily brag about her skills, and it's another reason why she thinks she knows better than her mother, as Merida is a warrior while Elinor is a diplomat. For now, Merida thinks actions speak louder than words. She's willing to put herself and others in danger just to have things her way, such as running away from home, following mysterious Wisps, and paying off a witch, all just she can change her mother - not change the tradition of marriage, but to make her mother change, since 'clearly' she is in the wrong.
She can be sarcastic and a bit cruel with her tongue and words, but that's only because she thinks mostly in the present. If she actually stopped and thought about the future of everyone around her, she would probably be upset at what she's done and try to resolve it. Her tender moments can be shown around her beloved horse, to her brothers (sneaking them desserts instead of making sure they eat healthily) and jovially sharing her father's heroic stories. She's not a bad person, she just makes bad decisions and needs to grow and mature, and being around people who won't obey her or treat her like a princess may just help her do that. She's normally used to doing what she wants and defying others, so she may have just jumped from the frying pan and into the fire.
[Abilities]
- Horse riding
- Sword-play (enough that she was able to match her father, who's more than twice her size and strength!)
- Archery (able to hit precise targets, even as she's moving, and has enough strength that her arrows can go through other arrows and break through the backs of her wooden targets!)
[Other important stuff]
She's probably going to be a pain in the butt for a small while, being defiant and wanting to pick fights, but once she starts making friends and sees they're in danger, she'll probably start to mature. Also I will try to implement her accent in her dialogue, but not enough to be point of parody.
[Sample post]
[First Person]
- What were you doing before now?
You may not believe it, but I was with a witch! A real, live witch, just like in the stories! She had a talking bird, and her broom was flying, and she had spells and potions… and she was going to change my fate. That’s why you can’t ignore any story, there could always be a grain of truth to it. But… I don’t think this is what the witch had in mind for the spell. It’s completely different.
- If someone provoked or attacked you, what would you do?
If someone was as foolish as to do that, I hope they’re prepared for the consequences. By the time I was done with ‘em, they’d probably be crying home to their mom!
[She starts to laugh, but the mention of ‘mom’ makes it die off early. She shifts uncomfortably.]
… What’s the next one?
- Someone is trying to rob you! What do you do?
[This, somehow, gets her back into a good mood.]
What’s with all these lads trying to get me? Maybe I was too nice to the first guy that tried. Then this time I’ll show ‘em what a true member of the DunBroch kingdom can do!My father fought off Vikings, what’s one measly little robber going to try?
- Do you stand up against authority, go against all odds, and if you could, pierce the heavens with your fighting spirit? If not, would you if you could?
Now that’s the kind of stuff I’m talking about! That’s what my life is supposed to be like! But just because I happened to be born as a princess, I’m doomed from the start. Well let me tell you, no matter what crazy world or thing I’m in, the only one who decides my fate is me! I’ll pierce the heavens with my arrows, and no one is gunna stop me!
- Your country is in the middle of a war. What do you think of it? Do you support it or try to solve it yourself by going on an epic quest? Explain.
[That's one heck of an uncomfortable pause. She begins shifting again, maybe trying to look for a way out.]This sounds like something my mother would say... look, I'm only sixteen! How am I supposed to stop a war? That should be left to the King and Queen, and I'm not! But the other clans... they must respect my father enough to not start anything stupid. They made him their king after the fight with the vikings! Yeah, like they'd really start an entire war just because I won't marry their sons. That sounds completely logical.
[Cue eyeroll.]
- You just got a challenge to fight from one of the strongest gang leaders around. Do you accept or reject? Why?
[Phewwww. Visibly more relaxed.]Can we just stick to these kinda questions? Of course I accept! Apparently it's the third guy I'll be beating. That should be enough to make my name a legend around these parts, don't you think?
- Oh no! Someone tripped and injured themselves right in front of you! What do you do?
... Seriously? What kinda wee lamb can't just get up and walk it off!- Will you make a contract with me? /人 ◕ ‿‿ ◕ 人\
I've already done it with a witch, what have you got to offer me? You'll have to come up with a mighty good bargain compared to her.[Third Person]
- You've been in Somarium for some time and are out exploring. Choose one (or more) of the following settings: 1) a field full of aggressive scarecrows, 2) the forests of the floating mountain, 3) down by the lake, 4) somewhere in the streets of Somni. Remember to use the setting and the NPCs to your advantage. Have the character interact with the environment, or be reminded of home.
Heroes were made, not born. Merida could not just wait for her ‘real self’ to wake up, as others seemed so content to do. Dream or not, she intended to make a mark for herself in this place. What would be the point if she wasn’t remembered? If she had accomplished nothing, why be there in the first place? That was why, against the advice of… well, everyone, she had gone on to the face the scarecrows. Her confidence and pride were still stubborn beasts, and she honestly believed that she could be the one to get rid of them once and for all. She was the daughter of the great King Fergus! She was meant for such dangers, for such adventures! This was her fate, and she would choose it!
She believed this even when she got her first wound in the battle – even after the second and third – but after five of her arrows had been broken, and her legs had been swept, causing her to fall to the ground, a primal instinct begged her to leave. They were all around her now, and she was wounded in both body and spirit. Yet, even then, she pushed on her palms, trying to get up. She had to win. She had to be the best. This was her choice… and she couldn’t have been wrong! She must be rewarded for her spirit, just as all warriors do in legend! She would be rewarded, she would get her fate, she would get what she wanted –
“I want to go home!” She screamed to nobody, picking up a splintered arrow in her blistered fingers. “I want to see Dad, and the boys, and… and… I want to see my mother!” Hadn’t she earned it, through blood and sweat and tears? She couldn’t give up now, even when the fight was useless and she was destined to lose. “I’m going home! And you… none of you can stop me! I’ve earned it! I’ve chosen it!” Her vision blurred as she could swore she heard her mother whisper in her ears, of memories long since gone, that she’d always protect and be there for her precious little girl. “I’m going to see my mother!” She had to. She needed to. She plunged back into battle, praying that future speakers of this tale would end the story by saying once the brave Merida had vanquished the demon scarecrows, she was duly rewarded by being with her family again.
Legends were lessons, her mother always said. The lesson for this one, Merida thought as she fell once more, would be that for those with determined spirit, glory and happiness awaits.
[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?] Ever since I saw the movie, I've been wanting to play her somewhere sooo much. Since I'm already having fun with Mickey here, I thought I might as well take Merida along for the ride.
[Which rule was your favorite and why?] Same as before, the age rule. Age and maturity don't always go hand in hand, and sometimes you really need those differences, concerning your character and the atmosphere/environment in which you play in.
[Any questions?]
If you had the chance to change your fate... would you?
